Moksha is a Las Vegas-based jam band known for its dynamic blend of funk, rock, and improvisational music, drawing comparisons to acts like The Grateful Dead, Phish, and STS9. Formed in 2007, the band consists of John Heishman (bass, vocals), Brian “Tree” Triola (organ, keys, vocals), Pat Gray (drums, percussion), Jeremy Parks (guitar, lap steel), and Sam Lemos (vocals). The band has become a staple in the Las Vegas music scene, regularly drawing large crowds at venues like the House of Blues and Binion’s, with one July show attracting over 200 attendees. Despite being based in Las Vegas, Moksha tours extensively, including a notable monthly residency at the Jambalaya in Arcata, California, where they have built a strong following.
The band is known for its do-it-yourself approach, self-releasing albums and selling merchandise at shows to maintain creative and financial independence. Their debut album, Mammal or Machine, was released in 2011 and featured collaborations with guitar legend Brian Stoltz. Moksha has also performed at major events, including the inaugural Vegas Jungle Music Festival at AREA15 in July 2024, which was later canceled. The band frequently tours with special guests, such as trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick and saxophonists Peter Apfelbaum and Skerik, enhancing their live performances. Their music is characterized by extended improvisations, a strong groove, and a high-energy stage presence, with sets often evolving spontaneously based on crowd interaction.
